Jan Collins

Deputy Headteacher

Jan began her teaching career over 30 years ago after completing her B.Ed hons degree. After working for fifteen years in a main stream primary Jan’s focus moved to Special Educational Needs provision. She joined The Harlow Academy Special School in 2003. Working at The Harlow Academy provided Jan with opportunities to progress into senior leadership.

Jan is passionate about providing SEND pupils with tailored learning opportunities. She played a key role in implementing the fundamental approaches that became integral to specialist provision identified in the Rochford Report 2016. She was at the forefront in the development of specialist provision and curriculum for Harlow. She supported the development of the Routes for Learning assessment and tracking tool for complex learners, which is now used in many specialist provisions across the country.

Jan has been invited to share her practice and knowledge locally, nationally and internationally. Including in 2012 when she was invited to Zambia to advise and help set up a special needs provision.

Throughout her career Jan has strived to keep her knowledge and practice at the forefront of special needs provision. Recently this includes undertaking extensive training in Intensive Interaction, which enables SEND children to progress in their communication and learning. She now has to finalise the training to become an accredited trainer for this approach.

Outside of school Jan enjoys spending time with her family and her two very large dogs.

Jan is looking forward to working with the Evolve Trust to further develop the specialist provision offered by The Harlow Academy to encapsulate the Evolve Trust vision and values.
